Description

Our Best Selling Ceiling Fan – Amazing Style, Quality & Low Energy Use

zephyrous god of the west spring wind

Bodrum Luxury Spa & Resort Turkey – Purchased Zephyrs for all their luxury suites

Since its launch in June 2016 this has become our best selling and most reliable model.  Our customers really love them and come back for more.  We have aptly named this design the Zephyr, taken from the Greek god Zephyrus, who was god of the west wind, bringer of the light and early spring breezes.  It certainly lives up to its name with an unmatched performance! The larger sized 180cm/72″ fan moves a massive 14,400 m3/h of air smoothly with laminar flow, by slowly stirring it at just 50-132 rpm with an incredibly low 28 watts of power! The Henley Zephyr Eco ceiling fan is our own brand fan which means we can offer a great value fan that would normally cost over £1000 for around £650. It is beautifully styled on an early plane propeller but without the noise! It is an exceptionally high-quality ceiling fan made in Taiwan (renowned for being much better quality than China) by one of the best manufacturers globally.  They have been making ceiling fans for over 45 years for some of the large premium brands who have now mostly moved to China leaving them room to specialise in higher quality, lower volume products.  We have visited and quality checked the factory and production process ourselves which we found outstanding.

Chosen for the Best Resorts & Projects

The Zephyr is perfect for conservatories, restaurants, theatres, halls, large rooms or common areas where large coverage is needed the Zephyr can easily achieve coverage with its powerful ultra-low energy airflow. The EC motor is silent at low speeds (see below) and so ideal for bedrooms where every sound is amplified in the still of the night – we have supplied them to royalty in a number of countries and over a dozen of the World’s top exclusive hotels in the last 6 years without a single complaint and often repeat orders.

Top Turkish hotel chain Bodrum has fitted them to four of its resorts including a brand new hotel that opened in 2023. It was also selected for the to No 1 rated resort in the Caribbean, the Secret Bay in Dominica for their exclusive tree cabins where they have installed 90 Zephyrs with 20 on 3m long drop-rods. In the UK the exclusive private members club Soho House have installed them in it’s Oxford country hotel.

With its perfect blend of form and function architects and designers are regularly selecting the Zephyr for their projects such as the Poole museum refubishment project.

Electronically Commutated Motor

At the heart of the Zephyr fan is the patented electronically commutated motor (EC/ECM) which takes the best of the AC and DC motors.  It runs on an AC supply and has permanent magnets switching the voltage to DC as with a DC fan but the commutation (current direction switching to generate movement) is achieved by electronic means rather than the mechanical of traditional AC and the newer DC motors which both use brushes in contact with the rotor instead.  This makes for a highly efficient motor in a class of its own which wastes less energy resulting in less heat and noise.  Energy savings over an AC motor are up to 70% for the same performance. Consequently, there are no annoying buzzes, hums, clicks or wobbles and the precise speed control possible with DC motors results in much longer service and reliability.

Cherie Lee interior designers specialise in renovations of period and listed country homes and town houses. They chose the Zephyr in black with 1.8m blades and 3m drop rod (ceiling height is 6m) for their own offices in Alswick Hall, Hertfordshire.

Smooth Airflow Operation

Something that is often forgotten about on high performance ceiling fans is the way the air flows and the noise created.  With a high performance fan the airflow can be either laminar or turbulent.  Smooth laminar flow is far more pleasant on the eyes and skin as well as more efficient compared to uncomfortable turbulent buffeting airflow.  This is made possible by the slow moving blade rotation,  balanced motors and blades, and having the lowest speed of all our models at just 50 rpm (the slower the better as more efficient and comfortable).  This is the nirvana of airflow characteristics – a slow gentle stirring action which is nevertheless powerful.

Blade Construction

The blades are CNC machine-carved from a solid block of Firmiana Simplex hardwood, commonly called the Chinese Parasol Tree which is light and strong similar to balsa.  Firmiana is used for making furniture and musical instruments and is fast growing in sustainable forests.  It is a very strong and warp-proof hardwood but also very lightweight. The blades are hand-finished and balanced to perfection with a resilient painted finish. Both the motor and finish are damp location approved for salty or humid environments such as by the sea. With this fan you can just relax and experience the spring breeze without any of the fuss or distraction from the fan itself.

Quiet Performance

Note that all ceiling fan motors make a slight noise but this almost disappears at low speeds as does the airflow noise. Larger blades move more air and so can turn more slowly creating less noise. The Zephyr has been tested with noise measurements conducted at the German VDE sound testing and certification institute in Offenbach. The lower limit for the laboratory measurement is 32 dB(A) for the sound power LW and 15 dB(A) for the sound pressure LP at 3m away.  Since many ceiling fans are published on the market with one or the other value, we state the measured noise values both as sound power LW and as sound pressure LP 3m.  Results for the Zephyr LED lab testing are :

Speed 1  LP <15 dB (ie below the lower limit)
Speed 6  LP 20 dB
Speed 1  LW <32 dB  (ie below the lower limit)
Speed 6  LW 40 dB
Interpretation: The decibel range is a logarithmic so a 20 dB sound is 10 times louder than a 10 dB sound. The level of noise in a quiet bedroom, 30 dB, is 100 times louder than 10 dB. And 40 dB is 1,000 times louder than 10 dB.  So this fan is the quietest on the market (out of dozens we have tested) with the sound being imperceptible (below the lower measurable limits) at low speed and just above a normal quiet bedroom at maximum speed where there will be some airflow movement noise and a little bit of motor noise.  It is intended that speed 1-2 is used which is perfect for sleeping in as it creates the required air movement with no airflow or motor noise.  This works by a gentle stirring action to not only provide cooling and freshness from the air movement but also to draw in cool air though any open window as in temporate zones the night time temperture drops considerably which can be a big benefit to utilise.

Disclaimer: Beware if you have very sensitive hearing that all ceiling fan motors do make some noise, especially when new, which gets amplified in the quiet of the night when all the background noise has stopped.  If this is the case we suggest that you don’t buy a ceiling fan for your bedroom or if you do then get one with larger blades which can run just at slow speeds and still be effective at moving a good quanity of air.

Comparison with Air Conditioning Units – The Zephyr is considerably quieter than any good quality AC unit (eg Daikin AC)  even on their low-speed quiet/sleep night settings. The reason for this is that AC units have small sized fans inside that have to spin fast to push out the necessary amount of cool air.  In hot climates where AC is essential at night then a ceiling fan set to lowest speed combined with the AC also set to its lowest speed fan will create an much quieter and more comfortable overall night time experience with great cooling, freshness and with the lowest noise possible.  Very high-end hotels adopt this approach in their most expensive rooms.

Stand or desk fans – These make 10-100 times more noise for an equivalent air movement depending on the type and size especially the airflow due to the much higher speeds of the blades eg a 12″ blade desk fan blades spin at 1200rpm compared to the Zephyr’s gently slow 50rpm. For more details please refer to our articles elsewhere on our website eg Dyson fan facts.

MaxFordham the architects and designers of the new Poole museum refurbishment project chose 4 x 72″ Zephyrs on 3m drop rods for their meeting room.

Remote Control Operation

The Zephyr comes with a 2.4G GSM (similar to Wi-Fi but a higher and safer frequency) 6-speed remote control with reverse and light on/off, simulated breeze.  The remote can be linked or paired with a particular fan or group of fans to control zones in a restaurant and has a wall mounted cradle.  It takes 2 x AAA batteries. Wall control operation is also possible – see below for details.

EC/DC Motor

The Powerful EC/DC Brushless Inverter Slimline Ceiling Fan Motor

For a detailed technical explanation of why these EC motors are so efficient read the article in EC motors explained from the Editor of Appliance Design. Below we summarise the benefits.

At the heart of a ceiling fan is its motor so lets take a closer look at the unique EC/DC brushless inverter motor in the Zephyr.  The Zephyr uses a similar motor to the £2,000 Haiku ceiling fan but without the crazy price tag!  Taiwan is known to be the World lead in DC vector motor technology and energy-saving inverter controllers not just for ceiling fans but for many appliances such as fridges, freezers and air conditioning.  Inverter technology produces energy savings of up to 70% over conventional AC comparing like-for-like airflow.

It is called inverter as it converts mains AC to DC to change the wave cycle and then inverts it back to AC to give very precise control and efficiency.  The Taiwanese manufacturer spent 3 years of research and development to create this amazing motor (followed by independent testing by the Taiwan ministry of energy).  The final patented DC motor driver board that they developed makes the motor run smoother and quieter thus eliminating any noise.  These motors have been in production for a number of years now and are no longer just the preserve of the ultra-expensive ceiling fan models.

EC motors are brushless DC motors with external electronic controllers. The rotor contains permanent magnets and the stator has a set of fixed windings. The controller continually switches the phases in the windings to keep the motor turning. The energy losses internally generated by this electronic control are much lower plus these motors are not limited to set speeds and so typically have 6 speeds.  For more information about these motors watch this video and for more background information about the history and differences between DC vs AC ceiling fans.  The advantages of this patented motor are as follows:

  • Efficiency – An EC DC motor give 70% enHenleyfan_zephyr_Eco_low_energy_ceiling_fan_walnut_closeupergy savings over an AC motor for the same airflow
  • Size – A smaller motor can be used to produce the same power output.
  • Voltage Variations – The motors are not affected by variations in voltage or frequency like AC motors are and so run very smoothly.
  • Speed control – AC fans use capacitors to control the speed which can start to make noise or fail in time.  The circuit controls the speed in a linear fashion and so can run at a bigger range of speeds.
  • Protection – Included in EC motor electronics is protection against: voltage overload, low voltage conditions, phase loss, power surges, locked rotor and overheating.  None of this protection is available on an AC motor.
  • Soft Start The electronics of an EC motor can provide a soft start, reducing startup current spikes and preventing nuisance breaker trips, and allowing lower component ratings in the system.
  • No Cogging – This phenomena means that a motor with no load a DC motor can sometimes fail to start. But with full sine wave control this is eliminated completely.
  • Noise – With speed controlled AC motors, noise levels will show spikes corresponding with the voltage frequency (motor hum), but not so with EC motors.  This motor is very quiet and so ideal for bedrooms or places where the ambient sound levels are very low in the middle of the night.
  • Cooler operation – The increased efficiency creates a cooler running motor at 30°c instead of the 70°c of an ac motor, essential for a ceiling fan whose main purpose it to cool!
  • Reliability – A lower motor temperature = lower bearing temperature = more reliability.
  • 2.4G WiFi – Reliable wireless communication technology for the remote control avoids interference and can pass through internal walls easier as well as provide for unlimited zoning permutations.
  • Installation – Simple 2 screw install system.

17 reviews for Henley Zephyr Wood Eco Designer DC Ceiling Fan 122,152,180cm

  1. Sarah Cummins (verified owner)

I saw this fan in a restaurant in Australia and was impressed with it so bought one for my large lounge. It is the best one I have ever come across everyone who sees it loves it. Worth every penny – Thanks Henley Fan

  2. Michael Stephenson (verified owner)

What a brilliant fan – I never knew anything as nice as this existed. As an interior designer I can appreciate the thoughtful and clever design of the blades and motor. I will certainly be specifying this for my clients.

  3. Celia Robinson (verified owner)

Impressive style and design. It also works magnificently well – I love it!

  4. Hans Akerman (verified owner)

I bought a Zephyr in walnut with the smaller blades and decided after a week that the larger one would be better for my large open plan office. Niki was very understanding and helpful in dealing with the matter and we had our replacement blades the next day. Quality products and service like this are hard to find these days and I would highly recommend Henley Fan.

  5. A Godsend – Toby Dalton (verified owner)

This fan was a life saver for us in the recent hot weather as our bedroom has a high vaulted ceiling that gets very hot. This worked really well and was also very quiet.

  6. Just Beautiful – Sarah Clayton (verified owner)

This fan looks more beautiful than the photos. The light wood finish and black motor as simply stunning.

  7. A quality product – Graham Ainsworth (verified owner)

My Dad is a qualified electrician and commented on the quality of this product. Everything about it speaks of quality.

  8. Good service – Tim Kensley (verified owner)

The motor was making a slight ticking noise and so Henley Fan replaced it straight away without any fuss. This took a few days but solved the issue as we needed a silent fan in our bedroom. It looks very nice now it is up.

  9. Excellent Product – Peter Lincoln (verified owner)

Everything about this product is excellent. Well worth the money, I will definitely be buying some more.

  10. Disappointed – April Connolly (verified owner)

I had high expectations of this fan and was disappointed. The delivery was late and one of the blades was damaged which Niki sent us a replacement for but was annoying as it delayed us having it working quickly in the heatwave.

  11. The Best Ceiling Fan Ever – Mike Eve (verified owner)

Over the years I have bought many ceiling fans but this one is definitely the best one. A lot of careful thought and design has gone into it and the result is impressive. Well done Henley Fan!

  12. It’s a work of art! – Thomas Atherton (verified owner)

I really love the carved blades they are almost like a sculpture. The flowing lines and curves are really beautiful to look at and matched by an equally impressive performance.

  13. They Work Impressively – Richard Digby (verified owner)

I put 4 of these in my restaurant which already had AC and the improvement was amazing. I set the AC to be warmer saving money and the customers comment on the improvement too.

  14. Brilliant, better than expected! – Tina Colebrook (verified owner)

I am very happy with my choice. The Zephyr looks great and works great and is so quiet in my lounge.

  15. Simple, effective style – Tom Stephens (verified owner)

This was one of my better investments and makes my small office so much more comfortable on hot days.

  16. A godsend for my hot apartment – Sara Gabrowski (verified owner)

I couldn’t get airflow through my apartment as the windows are all on one side. This does the trick wonderfully and now I can work and sleep in a pleasant temperature instead of feeling cooked all the time.

  17. Perfect for my restaurant – Toby Robinson (verified owner)

I bought 6 of these for my restaurant and they work a treat. We have air conditioning but it was making the food cold leading to complaints. With the fans we have turned the AC to low, saved a load on the electric and have more comfortable customers.
